Artists Bluff

Easy-Moderate • 1.5 miles round trip • ~1 hour • 30 min from North Conway (Franconia Notch)

One of the best views-to-effort ratios in the White Mountains. The short, moderately steep trail leads to a rocky outcropping with panoramic views of Franconia Notch, Echo Lake, and the surrounding peaks. It's steep in a few spots but short enough that most reasonably fit hikers can handle it. The summit views are absolutely spectacular in every season — fall foliage from up here is the stuff of postcards. Combine it with a swim at Echo Lake (the Franconia one) for a perfect half-day outing.

Cathedral Ledge

Moderate • 2.5 miles round trip • ~1.5-2 hours • 10 min from North Conway

A North Conway classic. The trail winds up through the forest to the top of a 700-foot sheer granite cliff face that offers breathtaking views of the entire Mount Washington Valley. You'll see rock climbers scaling the face below you. There's also a road to the top if you want to drive up and just enjoy the views (but the hike is worth it). Cathedral Ledge is one of the most photographed spots in the valley. The nearby Echo Lake at the base is perfect for a post-hike swim.

Mt. Willard

Moderate • 3.2 miles round trip • ~2-3 hours • 25 min from North Conway (Crawford Notch)

Often called the best view for the least effort in the White Mountains. The trail climbs steadily through beautiful birch and spruce forest to a clifftop overlooking all of Crawford Notch — a dramatic U-shaped glacial valley. The view from the top is genuinely jaw-dropping and shows up in nearly every White Mountains guidebook. The trail is well-maintained and family-friendly for kids who can handle a moderate uphill. Park at the AMC Highland Center in Crawford Notch. This is a must-do.

Franconia Ridge Loop

Hard • 8.9 miles loop • ~6-8 hours • 30 min from North Conway

This is it — the single most iconic hike in all of New Hampshire. The Franconia Ridge Loop takes you above treeline along a narrow, exposed ridge connecting Little Haystack, Mt. Lincoln, and Mt. Lafayette, with 360-degree views that feel more like the Alps than New England. The trail is strenuous with significant elevation gain (3,900+ feet), but the ridge walk above treeline is an experience you'll never forget. Start early, bring layers (wind above treeline is serious), and check the weather. Not recommended in bad weather or for inexperienced hikers.

Mt. Washington via Tuckerman Ravine

Expert • 8.4 miles round trip • ~8-10 hours • 25 min from North Conway (Pinkham Notch)

The ultimate White Mountains challenge. Mt. Washington (6,288 feet) is the tallest peak in the northeastern United States, and Tuckerman Ravine is the most classic route to the summit. The trail is relentless — 4,200+ feet of elevation gain through dense forest, then up through the massive glacial cirque of Tuckerman Ravine, and finally across exposed alpine terrain to the summit. The weather on Mt. Washington is among the most extreme on Earth (the highest wind speed ever recorded was here — 231 mph). This is a serious mountain. Bring extra layers, food, water, and a headlamp. Check the Mt. Washington Observatory forecast before going. Incredible, but respect the mountain.
